Veyo, Utah

The town lies along State Route 18 north of the city of St. George, the county seat of Washington County.[3][4] The elevation of Veyo is 4,485 feet (1,367 m).[1] Although Veyo is unincorporated, it has a post office with the ZIP code of 84782.[5] The population was 483 at the 2010 census. One tradition says the community name is an acronym of virtue, enterprise, youth, and order; another says it combines verdure and youth. There is a town of Veyo in Spain that is also referred to as La Peña, which means "rocky outcrop".[6]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 483 people residing in the CDP. There were 193 housing units. The racial makeup of the town was 94.6% White, 0.8% American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, 2.3% from some other race, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.

Virgin, Utah

Virgin is a town in Washington County, Utah, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. The first settlement at Virgin was made in 1858.[3] It is located along the Virgin River (for which it is named),[4] and not far from Zion National Park. The elevation is 3,606 feet (1,099 m). It lies on the route of State Route 9.

As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 596 people, 202 households, and 139 families residing in the town. The population density was 50.1 people per square mile (19.3/km²). There were 243 housing units at an average density of 20.4 per square mile (7.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 91.8% White, 2.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.4% of the population.

There were 202 households out of which 23.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.9% were married couples living together, 6.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 22.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.14.

Washington, Utah

Washington is a city in south central Washington County, Utah, United States and is a part of the St. George Metropolitan Area. The area is also known as Utah's Dixie because the Mormon pioneers who settled the St. George area came to the area to raise cotton, which was milled at the cotton mill in Washington. The population was 8,186 at the 2000 census, and 18,761 as of 2010. Washington is a fast-growing east side suburb of St. George, and is the second largest city in Washington County.[3]

The city was named after U.S. President George Washington.[4] The city administration has tried to encourage the use of the name "Washington City" in recent years.[5] The U.S. Post Office lists "Washington, UT 84780."

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 32.5 square miles (85.2 km²), of which 32.5 square miles (85.1 km²) is land and 0.07 square mile (0.1 km²) (0.10%) is water.

Wendover, Utah

Wendover is on the western border of Utah, and is contiguous with West Wendover, Nevada. Interstate 80 runs just north of both cities, while Interstate 80 Business (Wendover Boulevard) runs through the two cities. The Wendover Cut-off was the former path of the Victory Highway as well as U.S. Route 40 to Wendover. Today it serves as a frontage road between Wendover and Knolls just to the south of the Interstate.

The transcontinental telephone line was completed as workers raised the final pole at Wendover, Utah on June 27, 1914, after construction of 3,400 miles of telephone line. However, the line was not initiated until January 25, 1915, when the first transcontinental telephone call was made to coincide with the opening of the Panama Pacific Exposition.[5]

Recently[when?] the Utah Department of Transportation completed an interchange at Aria Boulevard on Interstate 80.[3][dead link] Investment is also underway to restore the Wendover Airfield[7] which is currently managed by Tooele County. Meanwhile, lodging has increased along Wendover Boulevard in recent years.[8]

West Jordan, Utah

West Jordan is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. West Jordan is a rapidly growing suburb of Salt Lake City and has a mixed economy. According to the 2010 Census, the city had a population of 103,712, placing it as the fourth most populous in the state.[3] The city occupies the southwest end of the Salt Lake Valley at an elevation of 4,330 feet (1,320 m). Named after the nearby Jordan River, the limits of the city begin on the river's western bank and end in the eastern foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains, where Kennecott Copper Mine, the world's largest man-made excavation is located.

Settled in the mid-19th century, the city has developed into its own regional center. As of 2012, the city has four major retail centers; with Jordan Landing being one of the largest mixed-use planned developments in the Intermountain West.[4] Companies headquartered in West Jordan include Mountain America Credit Union, Lynco Sales & Service, SME Steel, and Cyprus Credit Union. The city has one major hospital, Jordan Valley Medical Center, and a campus of Salt Lake Community College, which is designed to become the main campus by 2020.

City landmarks include Gardner Village, established in 1850, and South Valley Regional Airport, formerly known as "Salt Lake Airport #2." The airport serves general aviation operations as well as a base for the 211th Aviation Regiment of the Utah Army National Guard flying Apache and Black Hawk helicopters.

Woodruff, Utah

The first settlement at Woodruff was made in 1870.[3] A post office called Woodruff has been in operation since 1872.[4] The town was named in honor of Wilford Woodruff, 4th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[5]

This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Woodruff has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.[6]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 194 people, 60 households, and 49 families residing in the town. The population density was 361.4 people per square mile (138.7/km²). There were 75 housing units at an average density of 139.7 per square mile (53.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 100.00% White.

Woods Cross, Utah

Woods Cross is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 9,761 as of the 2010 census,[3] with an estimated population in 2014 of 11,097.[4]

Woods Cross is named after Daniel Wood, an early settler in the Utah Territory.[5][6] Wood (October 16, 1800 - April 15, 1892) was a Mormon pioneer and a settler of the western United States. He was the son of Henry Wood and Elizabeth Demelt.[7][8][dead link][9][dead link][10][11] He was born in Dutchess County, New York and died in Woods Cross.

Woods Cross is in southeastern Davis County, bordered to the north by West Bountiful, to the east by Bountiful, and to the south by the city of North Salt Lake. According to the United States Census Bureau, Woods Cross has a total area of 3.9 square miles (10.0 km2), all of it land.[3]

Sterling, Utah

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 235 people, 73 households, and 58 families residing in the town. The population density was 976.3 people per square mile (378.1/km²). There were 81 housing units at an average density of 336.5 per square mile (130.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 1.28% Native American, 0.43% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.70% of the population.

There were 73 households out of which 45.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.5% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.22 and the average family size was 3.72.

In the town, the population was spread out with 37.0% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.

Syracuse, Utah

Syracuse is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States, between the Great Salt Lake and Interstate 15, about 30 miles (48 km) north of Salt Lake City. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 24,331 at the 2010 census,[1] an increase of 158.9% since the 2000 census. The city has seen rapid growth and development since the 1990s.

The city is located in northern Davis County on the eastern side of the Great Salt Lake. It is bordered to the north by West Point, to the northeast and east by Clearfield, and to the southeast by Layton. A causeway on SR 127 connects Syracuse to Antelope Island State Park in the Great Salt Lake.

As of the census of 2010, there were 24,331 (2010) people, and 6,362 (2010) households residing in the city. The population density was 2,793.46 (2010) people per square mile (1,736.69/km² (2010)). There were 6,534 (2010) housing units at an average density of 298.6 (2010) per square mile (115.3/km² (2010)). The racial makeup of the city was 94.6% (2010) White, 2.9% (2010) Asian, 1.2% (2010) African American, 0.7% (2010) Native American, 0.6% (2010) Pacific Islander, 2.7% (2010) from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6% (2010) of the population.

Tooele, Utah

Tooele (/tuˈɪlə/ ( listen) too-IL-ə) is a city in Tooele County in the U.S. state of Utah. The population was 22,502 at the 2000 census, and 32,115 at the 2010 census.[5] It is the county seat of Tooele County.[6] About 30 minutes southwest of Salt Lake City, Tooele is known for Tooele Army Depot, for its views of the nearby Oquirrh Mountains and the Great Salt Lake.

The Tooele Valley had no permanent settlement when Mormon pioneers entered the Great Salt Lake Valley in July 1847; it was covered with abundant tall grass. The Mormons first used the valley as wintering grounds for their herds.[7] In September 1849, three families settled on a small stream south of present Tooele City. Other families slowly joined them, and by 1853 Tooele City Corporation was organized.

The 20th century brought more industrialization; in 1904 the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad built a line through the city, and in 1909 the International Smelting and Refining Company smelter was built in Carr Fork/Pine Canyon east of the city . The Tooele Valley Railway, a seven-mile line, ran from the smelter west to the Union Pacific Railroad main line. This line brought ore from various area mines to the smelter; later a 20,000 ft aerial tramway was also used to transport ore from the mine to the smelter. By 1941 a 22,000 ft tunnel had been completed through the mountain, to move ore to the smelter entirely underground. The smelter began processing copper in 1910, with lead and zinc processing commencing in 1912. In 1946 the copper smelter ceased operation, the zinc operation halted in 1968, and the lead processing was halted in 1972. The entire site was demolished during 1972-74. However, consideration was being given during this latter period to extracting ore from Carr Fork Canyon, rather than relying on the ore from the east face of the mountain range. In 1969 the mining company began exploration drilling. In 1974 a copper mine and mill ("Carr Fork Operations") was started; it began processing ore in 1979, and ran until 1981. The Tooele Valley Railway was used to haul away the scrap when the International smelter was torn down, and remained to serve the Pine Canyon mill. It was shut down and abandoned when the Pine Canyon “Carr Fork” mine and mill shut down; its last day of operation was 28 August 1982.[8]
